The South East Youth Stakeholders Forum (SEYSF) has strongly opposed the proposal by the House of Representatives to create only six states for the South East region, insisting that the zone deserves seven states to achieve parity with other regions in Nigeria.
In a statement released by its spokesman, Gerald Nwaorisa, the group decried the current political structure, which leaves the South East with only five states—fewer than other geopolitical zones with six or more.
“This imbalance has led to political, economic, and developmental marginalization of the region over the years,” Nwaorisa stated. “While we acknowledge the attempt to address this historical injustice through the proposed creation of additional states, we categorically reject any proposal that falls short of ensuring equity and fairness.”
The forum emphasized that only the creation of a seventh state would align the South East with other regions and uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and national unity. It called on South East lawmakers, governors, political leaders, and other stakeholders to reject any plan that fails to achieve full equity.
“Any attempt to deny the region its rightful number of states will be seen as a deliberate act of continued marginalization,” the group warned.
SEYSF reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of the South East people and urged its representatives to stand firm in ensuring that justice prevails.
