The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to three individuals standing trial in connection with a tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 pupils on December 18, 2024.

The trio includes the school principal, Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi; the proprietor of Agidigbo FM, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat; and Olori Naomi Silekunola, an estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi. Justice K.B. Olawoyin presided over the bail hearing on Monday, January 29, 2025.

During the session, counsels for the defendants presented arguments that convinced the court to grant bail. The specifics of the bail conditions, however, were not disclosed at the time of this report.

The case revolves around the December 18 tragedy at Islamic High School, where a stampede led to the deaths of 35 students, sparking widespread grief and outrage. The prosecution alleges negligence on the part of the defendants, which reportedly contributed to the catastrophic incident.

The defendants were initially remanded at the Agodi Correctional Facility by an Oyo State Magistrate Court sitting in Iyaganku. The development drew significant public attention, given the high-profile individuals involved in the case.

Further details on the court’s decision and the ongoing trial will be provided as the case unfolds.
