Saraki Urges Nigerians in Diaspora to Contest Elections

BREAKING: EFCC arrests Saraki over renewed allegations of corruption

Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has called on Nigerians living abroad to actively participate in the country’s political process by vying for elective offices, noting that their education, exposure, and global experience position them to drive meaningful change.

Speaking during the Kings College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA) North America reunion gala held in Houston, Texas, Saraki delivered an address titled “Empowering the Future: From Legacy to Infinity”, where he challenged the diaspora community to rise above silence in the face of poor governance back home.

Saraki decried a trend where competent candidates are often overlooked during elections, paving the way for individuals with no concrete plans or vision to assume office merely to attain social prestige.

“The real tragedy of our political system is that people with genuine ideas and the capacity to transform the nation are often rejected at the polls,” Saraki said. “Instead, those who seek office for status alone, without clear-cut policies, are voted into power.”

He further expressed concern that many elected officials run government based on personal whims or depend on “government scammers” — individuals who exploit every administration for personal gain.

Highlighting the influence of Nigerians in the diaspora, Saraki said their voices and opinions are respected back home and can be powerful in shaping the country’s future.

He added, “You must speak out. You must make leaders accountable, demand transparency, and insist on electoral reforms that ensure fairness, unity, and meaningful development.”

Saraki emphasized the need to rebuild Nigeria’s institutions, block resource leakages, and create an environment where citizens can pursue their goals meaningfully.

This call adds to Saraki’s growing efforts to engage citizens — both at home and abroad — in a broader conversation about leadership, governance, and accountability in Nigeria.
