Sanwo-Olu Powers Lagos Forward with New Electricity Commission

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the constitution of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), marking a major milestone in the development of the state’s energy sector. The commission is tasked with regulating and overseeing electricity market operations within Lagos, a move that aligns with the government’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and reliability in energy delivery.

The appointments, which take immediate effect pending confirmation by the Lagos State House of Assembly, include Engr. Abimbola Odubiyi as Chairman and Non-Executive Commissioner, Dr. Fouad Animashaun as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Kofo Olokun-Olawoyin as Executive Commissioner for Legal Advisory, Registration, and Licensing, Engr. Oluwaseun Fadare as Executive Commissioner for Engineering and Standards, and Barr. Bunmi Benson as Market Operator.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in the commission’s ability to drive Lagos’ energy agenda, emphasizing that the constitution of LASERC is a crucial step in ensuring the state remains a leader in energy innovation and reliability.

Engr. Abimbola Odubiyi, the Chairman, brings extensive experience from his time as a pioneer commissioner with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. He has worked on projects involving gas and coal power stations and electricity tariff design. Odubiyi described his appointment as an honor and pledged to collaborate with the team to enhance Lagos’ energy landscape.

Dr. Fouad Animashaun, the Executive Commissioner and CEO, is an expert in energy policy and infrastructure. He previously served as Managing Director of Igando Electric and Special Adviser on Power to the Lagos State Government. He reiterated his commitment to achieving Lagos’ inclusive and growth-focused energy vision.

Mrs. Kofo Olokun-Olawoyin, the Executive Commissioner for Legal Advisory, Registration, and Licensing, is a seasoned legal expert with leadership experience at Eko Electricity Distribution Plc and the Transcorp Group. She expressed enthusiasm for developing a regulatory framework to support sustainable energy solutions in Lagos.

Engr. Oluwaseun Fadare, the Executive Commissioner for Engineering and Standards, has held senior leadership roles in Transcorp Power Limited and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company. He stated his commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions for Lagos residents.

Barr. Bunmi Benson, the Market Operator, is an energy law and digital innovations specialist with a track record in leading high-value energy projects. She emphasized the importance of ensuring a fair, transparent, and efficient electricity market in Lagos.

The establishment of LASERC signifies a pivotal moment in Lagos State’s energy sector, further solidifying its position as a leader in energy innovation and sustainability in Nigeria.
