LAGOS — Former Emir of Kano and ex-Central Bank Governor, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s economy, stating that the administration has not managed the nation’s finances effectively. Speaking at the 21st Memorial Lecture of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, Sanusi revealed his decision to withhold economic advice from the government, citing strained relations.
Addressing the audience at the lecture themed “Bretton Woods and the African Economies: Can Nigerians Survive Another Structural Adjustment Programme?” Sanusi expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s policies, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floatation of the naira, which have exacerbated inflation and economic hardship across the country.
“Is everything being done correctly? No. When I’m ready to discuss the economy, I will,” he stated, emphasizing that he no longer sees the administration as an ally and, therefore, will not act like one.
Sanusi criticized the government for its inability to effectively communicate the reasoning behind its policies, stating, “They don’t even have people with the pedigree to articulate their policies to the public. Let them explain to Nigerians why they are implementing these measures.”
Historical Context and Current Tensions
Sanusi’s critique comes amid heightened economic challenges, which he partly attributed to decades of poor governance and mismanagement. Reflecting on past warnings about the consequences of irresponsible economic decisions, he remarked, “What we’re experiencing today is, at least in part, the result of decades of irresponsible management.”
The former Emir’s relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is also marked by controversy. In 2020, he was deposed as Emir of Kano by then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, now the APC National Chairman. Though reinstated last year by the current Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf, the decision has sparked legal battles as former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero contests his removal.
Honoring Gani Fawehinmi’s Legacy
While addressing economic issues, Sanusi also paid tribute to the late Gani Fawehinmi, describing him as a beacon of integrity and moral excellence in the legal profession. He urged Nigerian lawyers to emulate Fawehinmi’s virtues and commitment to justice.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), represented by Mr. Henry Agbebire, also spoke at the event. Keyamo praised Fawehinmi’s enduring impact on human rights advocacy and governance. He credited Fawehinmi’s mentorship as instrumental in shaping his activism and career, stating, “The late Chief Gani Fawehinmi left an indelible mark on human rights advocacy, public service, and the legal profession.”
Prominent Figures in Attendance
The event drew notable figures, including NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN), Lagos Attorney General Lawal Pedro (SAN), and human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN). Discussions centered on addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and upholding the principles of justice and equity.
As Sanusi hinted at potentially addressing the nation’s economic challenges in the future, his remarks underscored the need for accountability and transparent governance during challenging times.
