Women across Rivers State took to the streets on Friday in a peaceful protest against what they described as an unconstitutional move to impose a state of emergency in the state.
Led by activist Nancy Chidi Nwankwo, the protesters decried the alleged attempt as a politically motivated scheme aimed at undermining democratic governance and silencing the will of the people.
“The situation in Rivers State does not warrant any form of emergency rule. There is no real threat to national security here,” Nwankwo declared during the protest.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, the women demanded the immediate restoration of all democratic institutions in the state, including the full reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
They condemned what they termed a “military-style intervention disguised as a state of emergency,” describing it as unjust, undemocratic, and a grave threat to civil liberties.
The group further called on respected Nigerian statesmen, including former presidents and members of the international diplomatic community, to intervene and prevail on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reverse what they see as a serious breach of constitutional order.
The women vowed to maintain peaceful resistance in the face of what they called tyranny, reaffirming their commitment to defending democracy, justice, and the right to self-determination.
