Rivers State Tension Rises as Fubara Denies Receiving Budget Ultimatum

The political crisis in Rivers State deepens as Governor Siminalayi Fubara denies receiving a 48-hour ultimatum from the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly to present the 2025 budget.

With the deadline set to expire at midnight on Wednesday, March 5, the state government, through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Tammy Danagogo, reiterated that no such letter had been received by the Governor’s office, the Deputy Governor’s office, or the Accountant-General’s office.

“As of the close of work on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, we are yet to receive the said letter,” Danagogo stated in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule.

Governor Fubara had earlier assured in a state broadcast on Sunday, March 2, that despite his personal views on the recent Supreme Court judgments, he remained committed to upholding the rule of law and acting in the best interest of Rivers people.

Meanwhile, Niger Delta leader and traditional ruler, Asari Dokubo, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the 27 lawmakers in Rivers State, cautioning against any attempt to impeach Governor Fubara.

Speaking in a live Facebook broadcast, Dokubo, who is the Da-Amakiri Tubo and Amanyanabo of the Elem Kalabari Kingdom, warned that removing Fubara from office could trigger instability and unrest in the state.

This latest development follows the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the legitimacy of the 27 lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Their reinstatement has significantly altered the political landscape, shifting the balance of power in the Rivers State Assembly in favor of Wike’s loyalists.

With tensions at an all-time high and the budget ultimatum nearing its deadline, Rivers residents anxiously await the next chapter in the unfolding political drama.
