The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has formally requested an extension from the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on Rivers State to provide a detailed briefing on the ongoing developments in the state.
Ibas made the request during a meeting with the committee in Abuja on Friday, following his earlier failure to appear at previous sessions on April 17 and 24. He expressed regret for his absence, acknowledging the importance of the committee’s oversight role.
“I have always held the National Assembly in the highest regard,” Ibas said, addressing the committee. “I recognise the importance of your work and your interest in the progress of Rivers State, which, although relatively calm, remains fragile.”
The request comes amid a tense political environment in the state, which has been under emergency rule since the suspension of the state legislature and the governor, Sim Fubara, along with his deputy. The committee, as part of its efforts to take over legislative duties in the state, called the meeting to engage Ibas on critical matters concerning the state’s transitional period.
Ibas, expressing his commitment to cooperate with the committee, appealed for additional time to properly prepare a comprehensive and accurate report. He emphasized that the sensitivity of the current situation in Rivers requires a thorough and clear presentation to support the committee’s vital work.
“I remain fully committed to ensuring that all relevant information is made available in due course to support your important work,” Ibas added.
The House committee has yet to respond to the request, but lawmakers are expected to consider the matter in the coming days.
