Rivers Crisis: Group Demands Arrest of Ijaw Leaders Over Alleged Threats to Oil Production

0

The Rivers Restoration Movement (RRM) has called for the arrest of prominent Ijaw leaders over alleged threats to disrupt oil production if Governor Siminalayi Fubara is impeached.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, RRM Director-General Johnson Georgewill accused former militant leader Alhaji Asari Dokubo, Ijaw National Congress (INC) President Prof. Benjamin Okaba, and Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) National Publicity Secretary High Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe of making inflammatory remarks that threaten national security.

Describing the statements as “reckless, thoughtless, and provocative,” Georgewill urged security agencies to take immediate action against those allegedly inciting unrest. He questioned whether these leaders considered themselves more Ijaw than the nine Ijaw lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, whom he claimed had been sidelined and denied their entitlements by the Fubara administration.

“Nigeria operates a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law,” Georgewill stated, insisting that Governor Fubara must comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the political crisis in the state.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, reassured the public that security agencies were prepared to contain any threats. He dismissed warnings from militant groups, including the Niger Delta Rescue Movement, which had threatened to attack oil installations and urged non-indigenes to leave the state.

“We are addressing the situation step by step; no one has a monopoly on violence,” Adepoju affirmed.

He urged residents to go about their lawful activities, assuring them that security forces remain vigilant in maintaining peace and stability in the state.
