Less than eight hours after the Chief Judge of Rivers State was placed under investigation for alleged age falsification, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has formally written to the State House of Assembly, notifying them of his intention to present the 2025 budget.
Governor Fubara had attempted to present the budget on March 12, 2025, but was reportedly denied entry into the Assembly Complex. The House had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the budget presentation, despite the state government not yet receiving the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgment directing compliance with constitutional procedures.
In his letter addressed to Speaker Martins Amaewhule, Fubara emphasized his commitment to the Supreme Court’s ruling and the need for cooperation among government arms.
“No matter the depth of our differences, we believe the interests of the state and our people should take priority over political conflicts,” the letter read.
The Governor has now proposed a March 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. for the budget presentation, or any other date within the month that the Assembly deems convenient.
With tensions high and the budget hanging in the balance, it remains to be seen whether the Rivers State House of Assembly will acknowledge and respond to the Governor’s request.
