Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 general election, has criticized the economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming that they primarily benefit a select few.
Rhodes-Vivour, speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, expressed concern over the widening economic disparity, highlighting the suffering of the majority of Nigerians. He pointed to recent reforms, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, which the President has vowed to sustain.
“The people are experiencing unprecedented hardship,” Rhodes-Vivour stated, stressing that over 70% of the average Nigerian’s income is now spent on transportation and food. “They’ve not even started to think about how they can afford accommodation,” he added.
The former candidate also criticized what he described as a “culture of wastefulness” and extravagance within the government, which he believes does not reflect the economic struggles faced by most citizens. He questioned the beneficiaries of the reforms, suggesting that only a few, including bankers, government officials, and the President’s close associates, are reaping the rewards.
“How many Nigerians can say they are benefitting from any reform right now?” Rhodes-Vivour asked.
