Resident Doctors Announce Nationwide 5-Day Strike, Hospitals to Shut Down from Friday

Resident doctors threaten nationwide strike over unresolved grievances

ABUJA — The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a five-day warning strike beginning Friday, September 12, 2025, to press home its demands over worsening conditions in the nation’s health sector.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory Administration, Agbor Affiong.

The decision followed NARD’s online National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, September 10, which dragged into the early hours of Thursday.

“Arising from the NARD E-NEC meeting held on Wednesday, the 10th of September, 2025, which extended into the early hours of Thursday, the 11th of September, 2025, the NEC members unanimously resolved to embark on a five-day warning strike,” the statement read.

According to the association, the industrial action will commence at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 12, and end on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. All chapters have been directed to notify their hospital managements while sustaining pressure for their demands to be met.

Earlier in the week, NARD President, Dr. Osundara Zenith, told NEWSMEN that members would ground public hospitals nationwide to protest poor working conditions, inadequate power supply in health facilities, certificate downgrading, poor remuneration, and other grievances.

NELSDAILY recalls that the Federal Capital Territory chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors is already on a separate seven-day warning strike, which commenced on Monday.
