In a recent interview shared on social media platform X, former presidential aide Reno Omokri disclosed that he turned down an offer from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to serve as his spokesperson ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
Omokri, who previously served under President Goodluck Jonathan, explained that he declined the role because he preferred to work with a sitting president rather than a presidential candidate.
“Atiku wanted me to be his spokesperson,” Omokri revealed. “I said no — I’m not going to be a spokesperson for a president and then be a spokesperson for a presidential candidate.”
Despite turning down the role, Omokri noted that he played a key part in building Atiku’s media team. “I hired his media team. I hired Segun Showunmi; I interviewed him and set his salary,” he added.
In recent times, Omokri has appeared to align himself more closely with the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, often criticizing opposition figures such as Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
Omokri is also reportedly among the individuals listed for screening by the Nigerian Senate for ambassadorial appointments, following a nomination by President Tinubu.
