Reno Omokri Defends DIG Frank Mba Amid IGP Tenure Controversy

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has urged the public to refrain from linking Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba to the ongoing debate surrounding the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Omokri stated that his inquiries revealed Mba remains committed to his role as DIG and fully supports Egbetokun. He warned that unfounded speculation could harm Mba’s career by misrepresenting his position and fueling unnecessary tension.

Egbetokun’s tenure has been a subject of public debate, particularly regarding whether he should retire upon turning 60 in September 2024. However, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, clarified that Egbetokun is entitled to a four-year tenure, effective from his appointment on October 31, 2023.

Amid the controversy, some social media users have speculated that Mba, who hails from the South-East and was promoted to DIG in June 2023, is positioning himself to succeed Egbetokun. Others argue that Egbetokun’s continued stay in office is intended to block an Igbo officer from becoming IGP.

Omokri dismissed these claims, describing Mba as a strong supporter of Egbetokun. He further emphasized that the appointment of an IGP is the exclusive prerogative of the President and is not influenced by social media narratives or sentimental arguments.

Omokri urged those spreading misinformation to desist, reiterating that Mba is focused on his duties and does not need unnecessary controversy jeopardizing his career.
