Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), advised contractors in charge of the renovation of 135 roads in the capital city and civil engineering services yesterday against contract modifications.
The minister, who issued the warning during the flag-off ceremony, stated that the projects would be completed in six months.
According to Wike, the FCT would pay all contractors in order for them to complete the work within the agreed-upon timetable.
“To the contractors, let me warn you right now, all of these things you’re doing with engineering services will not work again,” he stated.
“Nothing like variation; it will not work. Kobo, one naira, in the next seven days it becomes N15, it will not work again. It will not work, so don’t even try it. There is no variation in this job. We have the money to pay you. So, if you like to go to engineering services and do anything with them, it will not work. We are paying you your money and I assure you that nobody will owe you a dime. We are going to pay you and you must finish within the time we have agreed with you.”
He also advised Mr. Olusade Adesola, Permanent Secretary, FCT Administration, not to bring any paper requesting reconsideration or a file for unanticipated concerns, stating that “everything has been considered and anticipated.”
The minister urged citizens to help the contractors finish the job on time, noting that no development comes without some hardship. He also asked traditional rulers for help in ensuring that the youths and all inhabitants of their villages support the contractors in completing the task on time.
Earlier, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State, stated that the FCTA has made considerable progress in modernizing the capital city in just three weeks since Mr. Project (Wike) took office.
Mahmoud stated that the issue of streetlights had been resolved, that the issue of sanitation was being addressed, and that the road infrastructure would now be altered to benefit the population.
According to Ahmed Hadi, Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), many of the roads built in Phase I since 1980 have deteriorated.
Hadi stated that some projects would include scarification and removal of existing asphalt, while others would involve asphalt overlay. He stated that 135 roads in Wuse, Garki, and certain districts in Maitama and Asokoro, totaling 42 kilometers, would be included.
“When finished, there will be improved traffic flow, reduced travel time, and the roads will be a little safer,” he stated. Mr Muktar Betara, Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, voiced confidence in Wike’s ability to achieve the FCT’s revolutionary agenda.
He promised the minister of the committee’s assistance in his mission to make the FCT the preferred destination for all Nigerians.
