In a statement on Friday, the AfDB announced the outcome of a two-day meeting by the Steering Committee of the Board of Governors at its headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the candidates represent a diverse cross-section of Africa’s leadership and development expertise.
“The Steering Committee, after examining the candidatures, cleared the following list of candidates for the office of the President of the AfDB during the next election to be held on May 29,” the statement read.
The cleared candidates are:
Mr. Hott Amadou (Senegal)
Dr. Maimbo Munzele (Zambia)
Mr. Tah Ould (Mauritania)
Mr. Tolli Mahamat (Chad)
Ms. Tshabalala Swazi (South Africa)
Each contender brings a wealth of experience and a unique vision, setting the stage for a competitive election that could shape the future of Africa’s leading development finance institution.
The upcoming vote will determine the successor to current president Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who has led the bank since 2015, overseeing key reforms and navigating challenging global economic conditions.
The election outcome is expected to significantly impact Africa’s development agenda, particularly in infrastructure, economic growth, and climate resilience.
