In a significant diplomatic exchange, Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of peace negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, the phone call—which lasted nearly 90 minutes marked the first confirmed contact between the two leaders since Trump assumed office last month. The discussion reportedly covered a broad range of geopolitical issues, including prisoner exchanges, Iran’s nuclear program, and tensions in the Middle East.
“President Putin … agreed with Trump that a long-term settlement could be reached through peace negotiations,” Peskov stated, adding that Putin emphasized the need to address the “root causes of the conflict.”
Trump, in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, described the conversation as “lengthy and highly productive,” noting that both sides had agreed to “immediately” pursue diplomatic negotiations to end hostilities.
The Kremlin also revealed that Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow, a move that could signal further diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
