Putin Aims to Undermine U.S. Peace Efforts in Ukraine, Leaked Russian Document Reveals

Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, is reportedly intensifying efforts to prolong the war in Ukraine while weakening former U.S. President Donald Trump’s negotiating position in any potential peace deal.

According to a confidential Russian document obtained by a Western intelligence agency, Moscow is actively working to escalate tensions between the United States and its global allies. The revelation comes as Washington continues to mediate between Ukraine and Russia in pursuit of a ceasefire.

On Monday night, Trump confirmed that American envoys had traveled to Moscow to present a ceasefire proposal. However, the Kremlin has yet to accept the proposed 30-day halt in hostilities. Meanwhile, Russia has shown no signs of de-escalation, with heavy aerial bombardments continuing in Ukraine since the proposal was announced.

Leaked documents from a Kremlin-linked think tank, first reported by The Washington Post, suggest that Moscow has been working to derail peace negotiations since at least February. The document, reportedly drafted for the FSB’s Fifth Service—the security division overseeing operations in Ukraine—outlines strategies to enhance Russia’s global standing by exacerbating divisions between the U.S., China, and the European Union.

The think tank’s recommendations appear to have already influenced Russian state policy, with Moscow doubling down on its efforts to shape the geopolitical landscape in its favor. As diplomatic efforts persist, the leaked document underscores the challenges ahead in securing a viable resolution to the ongoing war.
