In a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday, students from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, launched an attack on the convoy of the state’s Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele. The incident occurred as the deputy governor made her way to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, to represent Governor Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day reception.
Reports indicate that the aggrieved students, wielding sticks and other dangerous objects, damaged several vehicles in the convoy. In the chaos, some security operatives sustained injuries while attempting to maintain order and ensure the safety of the deputy governor.
According to Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, the students’ aggression escalated upon recognizing the deputy governor. “Despite repeated appeals by her security detail and police officers to allow the convoy safe passage, the students grew more unruly, actively attempting to halt her movement,” Akinmade disclosed in a statement.
To diffuse the situation, Salako-Oyedele was forced to reroute to her lodge, allowing the protesters to clear the road before she resumed her journey to the official event.
The protest caused significant disruption, with the students blocking key roads and bringing vehicular movement to a standstill in parts of Abeokuta.
This incident highlights rising tensions in the state as authorities urge calm and constructive engagement to address grievances.
