As Nigeria marks Democracy Day 2025, scores of concerned citizens took to the streets of Lagos to voice their frustration over the economic hardship under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The protest, which began at the popular Ikeja Underbridge, drew a sizable crowd carrying placards with bold messages such as “Reverse Electricity Tariff Hike” and “No One Deserves a Death Sentence for Protesting Against Hunger.” Demonstrators are calling for an immediate review of key government policies they say have worsened the cost of living.
Despite the large turnout, the protest remained peaceful amid the presence of security operatives. The Lagos State Police Command assured the public that the situation was under control.
“There’s adequate security on ground for both celebrants and protesters. No cause for alarm,” said the State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin. “Your safety and security remain our priority.”
The protest highlights growing public discontent as Nigerians grapple with rising inflation, fuel subsidy removal, and increased utility tariffs.
