Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), marking a historic milestone as the first indigenous academic to hold the position since the institution’s establishment over six decades ago.
The announcement was first shared by legal practitioner and public affairs analyst, Chidi Onah, via his official Facebook page on Sunday night. “Finally, Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya is the next Vice Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Now, you can start congratulating him,” he wrote.
A member of the UNN Governing Council, who spoke to DAILY POST on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the development, stating that the selection process had just concluded. “Yes, we just finished the business of getting a new VC for UNN. He (Ortuanya) came top among other candidates,” the source said.
Professor Ortuanya’s emergence follows a rigorous selection exercise and is seen by many within the academic community as a significant step toward recognizing homegrown academic leadership. His appointment is expected to bring a renewed vision to Nigeria’s first indigenous university, aligning with its founding ideals of excellence, service, and national development.
Before his appointment, Prof. Ortuanya held various academic and administrative positions, and is widely respected for his contributions to legal scholarship and higher education governance in Nigeria.
His assumption of office will usher in a new chapter in the history of UNN, with expectations high among students, staff, alumni, and stakeholders.
