President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Monday, January 6, for Accra, the capital of the Republic of Ghana, to participate in the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7. The President’s trip to Ghana comes at the invitation of Mahama, who visited Tinubu in December 2024.
Mahama, who served as the 12th President of Ghana from 2011 to 2017, was reelected in December 2024. He is set to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose term will end in 2025.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, it was revealed that Tinubu’s attendance underscores the longstanding personal relationship between the two leaders, as well as the enduring bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
As Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will join several African leaders in the ceremony. He will be accompanied by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior government officials, marking this as Tinubu’s second trip to Ghana since taking office.
This trip is expected to further strengthen the ties between Nigeria and Ghana, two key nations in the West African region.
