Lagos, Nigeria – On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu welcomed His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, to his residence on Bourdillon Road in Lagos. The President, expressing his honor in hosting the monarch, highlighted the critical role traditional institutions play in promoting national unity and economic development.

In a post shared on X.com, President Tinubu emphasized the increasing importance of traditional leadership in strengthening the cohesion of the country and supporting governance at all levels. He noted that these institutions are key to advancing economic growth, fostering national identity, and addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

“Now more than ever, the role of our traditional institutions is crucial for fostering national cohesion, governance, and economic development at various levels,” Tinubu stated.

During their closed-door meeting, the President and the Awujale discussed various constructive solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, including the need to build partnerships that strengthen a shared national identity. Tinubu underscored the importance of cultivating an identity that reflects Nigeria’s values and supports the prosperity of all its citizens.

“I am very encouraged by this positive engagement with Kabiyesi as our administration continues to work assiduously towards a stronger, prosperous, and more united Nigeria,” Tinubu added.

The visit also provided an opportunity for the Awujale to express his gratitude to President Tinubu and the Federal Government for conferring on him the second-highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), during a ceremony held on May 10, 2024. The recognition was awarded in honor of Oba Adetona’s decades of exemplary service to the nation.

The conferral took place during a special celebration marking the monarch’s 90th birthday and his 64th anniversary as the longest-reigning first-class monarch in Nigeria. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented the President at the event, praised Oba Adetona’s lifetime contributions to the nation.

“Because Oba Adetona has honored our country and humanity with his many years of meritorious service, I therefore, on this special occasion of his 90th birthday ceremony, confer on him the second-highest National Honour of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger,” President Tinubu said.

The fruitful engagement between President Tinubu and Oba Adetona underscores the administration’s commitment to fostering partnerships between traditional and political leaders in the drive for a united and prosperous Nigeria.
