President Tinubu Blames Indiscipline for Deadly Stampedes During Palliative Distribution

President Bola Tinubu has attributed recent deadly stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja to widespread indiscipline and poor organization during palliative distribution events. Speaking during his first presidential media chat on Monday, Tinubu expressed his sorrow over the tragic incidents that led to multiple deaths.

“It is very sad that people are not well-organized. We must become a more disciplined society,” Tinubu said, offering condolences to those who lost loved ones. The president highlighted the importance of better crowd management and order during such events to prevent further loss of life.

The stampedes, which occurred on Saturday in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led to several fatalities and numerous injuries. Tinubu also recalled his long history of charity work, noting that he has been distributing foodstuffs and commodities for over 25 years without encountering such disasters due to careful planning and organization.

“It is good to give, but it must be done with discipline. I’ve been involved in charity for many years without such incidents because we take the necessary steps to ensure order,” Tinubu stated. He also cautioned organizers, saying, “If you know you don’t have enough to give, don’t publicize it.”

In light of these incidents, the Inspector General of Police has urged organizers of similar charity events to collaborate with security agencies and ensure compliance with crowd control and safety protocols. The stampedes followed a tragic event in Ibadan, where over 30 children lost their lives during a funfair, underscoring the urgent need for effective crowd management strategies.
