Presidency Denies Reports of CBN Governor Cardoso’s Resignation.

The Presidency has dismissed widespread media reports alleging that President Bola Tinubu asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, to step down. The reports, which surfaced on various online platforms on Tuesday, cited unnamed sources claiming that the president ordered Cardoso’s resignation due to his failure to stabilize the Naira and address the country’s economic woes.

In response, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, took to his verified X handle (@aonanuga1956), labeling the reports as false. “It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign,” Onanuga stated, refuting the claims of any such directive.

Meanwhile, the Presidency also addressed a separate claim by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, who stated that President Tinubu did not sign a peace accord before the 2023 presidential election. Bishop Kukah made this assertion during the Edo Election Townhall meeting held in Benin City on Sunday.

In response, Onanuga clarified that Tinubu had indeed signed two peace accords ahead of the election. According to him, the first peace accord, which committed candidates to free and credible elections, was signed on September 29, 2022, with Vice President Kashim Shettima standing in for Tinubu. The second accord, signed on February 23, 2023, required candidates to accept the election results, and Tinubu personally signed this document.

“Contrary to the claims by Bishop Kukah, President Tinubu signed both peace accords ahead of the 2023 election,” Onanuga emphasized.
