Pope Leo XIV Makes Passionate Global Plea: “Never Again War”

Vatican City — In a moving and historic first Regina Coeli address, Pope Leo XIV has made a passionate appeal for global peace, condemning the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and urging world leaders to end the violence and prioritise humanitarian efforts.

Addressing thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square and millions watching around the world, the newly elected pontiff echoed the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, declaring:

“In today’s dramatic context of a third world war fought piecemeal… I too appeal to the powerful of the world by repeating these ever-relevant words: never again war!”

The Pope began his address by reflecting on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, which he described as an “immense tragedy” that claimed over 60 million lives. He used the solemn remembrance to underscore the urgent need to prevent a similar global catastrophe in today’s volatile world.

Turning his attention to ongoing conflicts, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow over the prolonged war in Ukraine, saying,

“I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people.”
He urged for a true, just, and lasting peace, and called for the release of prisoners and the reunification of families.

The Pope’s voice grew emotional as he condemned the violence in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and the release of all hostages.

“I am deeply pained by what is happening. Let the fighting cease immediately… and may all hostages be released,” he appealed.

Amid these grave concerns, the Pontiff also welcomed positive developments in South Asia, praising the recent ceasefire announcement between India and Pakistan. He expressed hope that the agreement would lead to a lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy.

Concluding his address, Pope Leo turned to prayer, invoking Mary, Queen of Peace, to intercede for the world.

“How many other conflicts are there in the world?” he asked solemnly.
“May she present our appeal to the Lord Jesus and obtain for us the miracle of peace.”
