In a heartfelt appeal for peace, Pope Francis has called on nations embroiled in conflicts around the world to lay down their weapons in the interest of global harmony. The Catholic Pontiff made this impassioned plea on Wednesday during his traditional Christmas “Urbi et Orbi” message, addressing 1.4 billion Catholics and the global community from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
Speaking on the ongoing war in Ukraine, Pope Francis expressed deep concern over the suffering caused by the conflict, as reports indicated the country was subjected to 170 Russian missile and drone strikes on Christmas morning. The Pontiff urged for immediate dialogue and negotiations to achieve a just and lasting peace.
“May the sound of arms be silenced in war-torn Ukraine. May there be the boldness needed to open the door to negotiation and to gestures of dialogue and encounter,” he said to thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
The Pope turned his attention to the dire situation in Gaza, calling for a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. He highlighted the grave humanitarian crisis affecting the region, particularly the Christian communities in Israel and Palestine.
“I think of the Christian communities in Israel and Palestine, particularly in Gaza, where the humanitarian situation is extremely grave. May there be a ceasefire, may the hostages be released, and aid be given to the people worn out by hunger and by war,” he urged.
Extending his call for peace, Pope Francis addressed the ongoing civil war in Sudan, which has left millions at risk of famine. He implored warring factions in the Middle East and Sudan to silence their weapons and prioritize the welfare of their people.
The “Urbi et Orbi” blessing, meaning “to the city [of Rome] and to the world,” is a solemn papal tradition delivered on Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, and other significant occasions. It symbolizes the Pope’s spiritual connection to Catholics worldwide and his role as a messenger of peace.
At 88 years old, Pope Francis continues to use his global platform to advocate for reconciliation and humanitarian relief, urging leaders to act with compassion and courage to resolve conflicts and alleviate suffering.
