Pope Francis is making progress in his recovery from double pneumonia but will not preside over the annual Ash Wednesday service next week, the Vatican announced on Friday.
The 88-year-old pontiff has been receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14 after a severe respiratory infection led to further complications. While his condition is improving, the Vatican stated that his prognosis remains cautious due to the complexity of the infection.
In light of his ongoing hospitalization, a senior Vatican official will lead the traditional Ash Wednesday service on March 5, marking the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period leading up to Easter.
Despite his illness, Pope Francis, known for his tireless work ethic, has continued to oversee Vatican affairs from the hospital. However, the Vatican has not provided a timeline for his discharge.
