In a dramatic turn of events, the political landscape of Rivers State is in turmoil as the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has directed its members in the House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminialayi Fubara. The APC, with 27 members in the assembly, accuses Fubara of disrespecting the rule of law and insulting President Bola Tinubu.
According to Tony Okocha, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the state APC, Fubara’s recent comments about the legality of the Assembly have sparked outrage within the party. Okocha condemned Fubara’s alleged disregard for constitutional processes and declared that the APC would not tolerate such behavior.
However, Joseph Johnson, the Information and Communication Commissioner for the state, dismissed Okocha’s directive as a mere distraction. He refuted claims that Fubara denied the existence of the House of Assembly and emphasized that the governor had not made any such statement.
Meanwhile, Ijaw National Leader Edwin Clark has urged the Inspector General of Police to intervene and quell the escalating crisis. Clark warned that the situation could lead to anarchy if left unchecked and cited constitutional provisions regarding lawmakers’ defection as grounds for addressing the dispute.
In an open letter to the Police IG, Clark emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the country, urging decisive action to prevent further escalation of tensions in Rivers State. He called for restraint on the part of lawmakers and appealed for dialogue to resolve the crisis amicably.
As the political standoff intensifies, all eyes are on Rivers State, with stakeholders anxiously awaiting developments in this unfolding saga.
