ABUJA – The Nigeria Police Force has disbursed a total of ₦22,978,602,488.25 to 8,311 families of officers who died in active service between 2018 and 2024, in a renewed commitment to officer welfare and support for bereaved families.
According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the latest tranche of payments was made on May 23, 2025, with 1,235 families receiving a cumulative ₦2,855,181,796.55.
The disbursement, the statement revealed, covers insurance claims for the periods 2018–2019, 2021–2022, 2022–2023, and 2023–2024.
IGP Egbetokun emphasized the Force’s dedication to the welfare of its personnel, both serving and fallen. He described the initiative as “significant in clearing long-standing arrears of death benefit claims,” adding that while no compensation can replace a lost life, the gesture underscores the Force’s commitment to honoring the legacies of its heroes.
“The Nigeria Police Force is built on the pillars of service, integrity, and sacrifice,” Egbetokun said. “We remain committed to institutionalizing a responsive welfare system that ensures no Next-of-Kin is left in uncertainty.”
The Inspector-General reaffirmed that the welfare of police personnel remains a top priority, noting that the initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at ensuring accountability and compassion within the Force’s operations.
