British broadcaster Piers Morgan and acclaimed author JK Rowling have thrown their weight behind the United Kingdom Supreme Court’s landmark ruling affirming the definition of “woman” under the country’s equality law as based on biological sex.
The ruling, delivered on Wednesday by the Deputy President of the Supreme Court, Lord Hodge, has ignited widespread debate across social media platforms, drawing both praise and criticism from various quarters.
Reacting to the decision on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Piers Morgan stated:
“The consequence of today’s UK Supreme Court ruling on women/biology is that while trans people should be entitled to the same rights to fairness, equality, and safety as anyone else—and I sincerely believe that—they can’t erode women’s rights in the process.”
Rowling, a long-time advocate for the recognition of biological sex in law and policy, also publicly endorsed the court’s decision.
However, the ruling has met with backlash from segments of the LGBTQ+ community. A transgender X user known as SugarGSP expressed frustration, writing:
“The UK is so fucked. Supreme Court, you have essentially ruined any kind of social presence for many trans people.”
This development comes amid a growing global debate on gender identity, women’s rights, and sports inclusion. Just two months prior, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in February 2025 banning biological males from participating in women’s sports, citing the protection of fairness and safety in female categories.
The UK court’s ruling is expected to have significant implications for future legal interpretations of gender and sex, particularly in areas involving single-sex spaces, sports, and public policy.
