Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has paid a visit to embattled human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, following his recent release from detention.
Obi, who shared the update on his X account, described Farotimi as a symbol of resilience and courage, emphasizing his commitment to advocating for good governance in Nigeria. The visit took place after Obi’s meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
“Yesterday, following my visit and meeting with President Obasanjo, I made time to visit my dear younger brother, Dele Farotimi. Since his return from the correctional center in Ekiti, I have not had the opportunity to meet with him,” Obi wrote.
He expressed admiration for Farotimi’s dedication to the fight for a better Nigeria, adding that the lawyer remains in high spirits despite recent challenges.
“Dele Farotimi exemplifies courage in the face of adversity, consistently taking bold stands for good governance in our nation. I wish him a fruitful and productive year as we continue to work together toward the development of our country. A New Nigeria is POssible,” Obi added.
Farotimi’s recent legal troubles stem from an allegation of defamation against Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola. In December 2024, Farotimi was arrested and remanded in a correctional center in Ado Ekiti.
A Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti subsequently granted him bail, set at ₦30 million. He regained his freedom on Tuesday after meeting the bail conditions.
Farotimi’s steadfast commitment to advocacy for good governance continues to draw attention, with Obi’s visit serving as a testament to the lawyer’s enduring influence in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
