Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended the resignation of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, describing it as a courageous and honourable move that should inspire other public office holders grappling with health challenges.
Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, stepped down from his position on Friday, citing health concerns and the need to prioritize his personal well-being.
Reacting in a statement shared via his official X handle, Obi praised the APC chieftain for demonstrating self-awareness and responsibility by voluntarily relinquishing power.
“Stepping aside for health reasons is an honourable choice. It shows awareness and respect for the responsibilities of leadership,” Obi wrote.
He further emphasized the importance of having leaders who are physically and mentally fit to handle the demands of governance, noting that Nigeria can no longer afford the burden of medical tourism, prolonged sick leaves, or absentee leadership due to age-related or health complications.
“By this singular act, Dr. Ganduje has set a moral benchmark. I hope others in similar situations will reflect and do the same,” Obi stated.
Obi’s remarks have sparked renewed conversation about leadership accountability and the need for reforms that prioritize wellness, performance, and transparency in public office.
