Peter Obi Denies Ties to Abacha Regime, Says “I Never Met Him”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has firmly denied allegations linking him to the regime of the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

Obi, who also served as the Governor of Anambra State, stated that he neither worked with nor met Abacha during his time in power. Speaking on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi described the claim as baseless and emphasized that his entire career remains transparent and publicly documented.

The clarification follows recent accusations made by Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, who alleged that Obi collaborated with the Abacha regime.

Setting the record straight, Obi recounted an incident involving Nigeria’s ports during the Abacha era. He explained that, at the time, port operations had been halted, causing severe congestion and delays in import and export activities.

“There was a time during Abacha’s government when all ports were closed, leading to a major crisis in the sector,” Obi said. “Some of us in the business community sought an audience with the then Minister of Finance and later the President, to highlight the challenges.”

According to Obi, the government subsequently set up a temporary committee to address the port congestion, and private sector stakeholders, including himself, were asked to participate.

“That was the only involvement. After a few weeks, the committee concluded its work. Later, the government moved to reorganise and probe the ports, and my name was mentioned again for a panel. But I was never part of it, nor did I ever meet General Abacha,” he explained.

Obi stressed that any notion of him working with Abacha is unfounded. “I have never met Abacha. I don’t know him personally. Everything I have done is in the public domain,” he said
