Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the recent increase in Nigeria’s 2025 national budget, questioning the lack of a corresponding expenditure breakdown to justify the adjustment.
President Bola Tinubu had on Thursday announced an upward revision of the 2025 Appropriation Bill, raising it from ₦49.7 trillion to ₦54.2 trillion. The announcement, made through letters sent to both the Senate and the House of Representatives, detailed revenue sources but did not provide specifics on spending allocations.
Reacting via his X handle on Friday, Obi stressed the need for transparency and accountability, urging the National Assembly to ensure that the resources generated from Nigerians are judiciously spent on critical sectors such as education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation.
The former Anambra State Governor also pointed out that Nigerians are still awaiting a detailed account of the execution and expenditures of the 2024 “Renewed Hope” budget, passed in December 2023. He called on lawmakers to make the full details public before approving the new budget for 2025.
“As we work towards passing the Budget of Restoration for 2025, let us uphold openness, accountability, and the welfare of the Nigerian people. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great nation,” Obi stated.
With the 2025 budget now standing at ₦54 trillion, Obi’s demand for fiscal transparency is likely to fuel further debates on government spending and accountability.
