Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, stating that Nigeria’s progress depends on leveraging the experiences of both successful and failed leaders.
In a statement released on Monday by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi emphasized the importance of including opposition leaders and former government officials in his coalition, asserting that their insights—especially from past failures—are essential to rebuilding the country.
“You need the experience of those who have failed and those who have succeeded in moving on, and I need everyone,” Obi was quoted as saying. “It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system.”
The former governor also dismissed speculations suggesting he would serve as a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He firmly stated his focus is on contesting for the presidency, not a deputy position.
In addition, Obi reiterated his belief that a four-year single term is sufficient for a competent and visionary leader to begin turning the country around.
“I believe four years is enough to drive significant positive change if the right leadership and policies are in place,” he said.
Obi’s declaration signals the strengthening of a growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, with momentum building toward what could be one of the most competitive presidential races in Nigeria’s history.
