Peter Obi Criticizes Tinubu’s Economic Policies, Says He Is ‘Fulfilling’ Buhari’s Legacy

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, sarcastically commending him for staying true to his pledge of continuing where ex-President Muhammadu Buhari left off.

Speaking in Bauchi State on Thursday during a visit to Governor Bala Mohammed, Obi lambasted the current administration for its handling of the economy, urging Nigerians to prioritize competence and capacity over ethnic and religious politics.

“Tinubu promised to continue where Buhari stopped. If you look at it, Buhari left the dollar at about ₦400; today, it is about ₦1,500. Rice was about ₦40,000, now it’s over ₦100,000. Fuel was about ₦300, now it’s over ₦1,000. I can go on—everything has doubled or tripled,” Obi stated.

Drawing a comparison with Indonesia, Obi highlighted how the Southeast Asian nation successfully transformed its economy, while Nigeria’s GDP shrank from $500 billion to $200 billion, and per capita income fell from $3,500 to below $2,000.

He emphasized the urgent need to revive industries, invest in education and healthcare, and steer the nation toward productive governance.
