Peter Obi Criticizes Political Class for Ignoring Nigeria’s Deepening Socio-Economic Crisis

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned Nigeria’s political leadership for prioritizing trivialities over the country’s urgent socio-economic challenges.

In a statement shared on his official X handle, Obi described the current political climate as an “embarrassing spectacle,” warning that Nigeria is grappling with some of its worst crises, including escalating poverty, hunger, insecurity, and a growing number of out-of-school children.

“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria’s political leadership is rapidly descending into an embarrassing spectacle,” Obi stated. “We are at a time when our nation faces the highest levels of actual and multidimensional poverty, soaring infant mortality rates, millions of out-of-school children, and one of the most insecure and hunger-stricken environments on earth.”

He cautioned against governing the country like a “reality TV show” while millions of Nigerians continue to suffer, emphasizing the need for leadership built on character, competence, and compassion.

Obi also expressed concern that national discourse is being overshadowed by controversies, including allegations of sexual harassment in the National Assembly, budget padding, and judicial rulings that could destabilize state governance.

Furthermore, he criticized the trend of politicians defecting to parties where they believe they can manipulate their way into power, describing it as a reckless abandonment of responsible governance.

The former Anambra governor called for a renewed focus on education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, urging leaders to address the nation’s pressing concerns with urgency.
