Bolaji Abdullahi, National Spokesman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has ruled out the possibility of Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying such a move would be too risky.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise News Prime Time on Monday, Abdullahi emphasized that Obi is a committed member of the opposition coalition being championed by the ADC.
“Let me say clearly: Peter Obi is in the coalition,” Abdullahi stated. “Regardless of what anybody is saying, he remains part of this alliance. It is good to see that the ADC’s entry into the political landscape has spurred the PDP into some form of action.”
Abdullahi, a former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, further suggested that the PDP is currently constrained and under the influence of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“But everyone knows that the jugular of the PDP is in the hands of the ruling party,” he said. “Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows that he cannot take the risk of going back to the PDP.”
His remarks come amid reports of the PDP exploring ways to reconcile with Peter Obi, who left the party in 2022 to pursue his presidential ambition under the Labour Party. Obi, widely regarded as a major force in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, has remained central to ongoing discussions about a possible merger or coalition among opposition parties ahead of 2027.
