A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has asserted that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stands a stronger chance of becoming Nigeria’s president if he returns to the main opposition party.
Speaking during an interview on the Mic On Show podcast, Showunmi emphasized that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, possesses the political appeal and followership needed to clinch the presidency, but must align with a more structured and nationally rooted party to actualize his ambition.
“Peter has the numbers and the animated energy behind him. If that same momentum follows him into the PDP and he emerges as the party’s presidential candidate, I can guarantee you he would take the South East, the South South, the Christian North, and the North Central,” Showunmi stated confidently.
He noted that Obi’s 2023 presidential bid under the Labour Party made a significant impact, including defeating Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos State — a development that shocked many political observers.
Obi, who left the PDP ahead of the 2023 general election to join the Labour Party, contested against All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar. He won in 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but eventually lost the election, with Tinubu declared president by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Showunmi’s comments have reignited conversations around Peter Obi’s next political move and whether a return to the PDP could reshape Nigeria’s opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
