Peter Obi Backs Tinubu’s Tax Reforms, Calls for Public Engagement

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, describing the initiative as critical and long overdue. However, Obi emphasized the need for inclusive public hearings to ensure transparency and build trust in the process.

The reforms, spearheaded by the Tax Reform Committee chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, aim to streamline Nigeria’s tax administration and foster a business-friendly environment. Despite these goals, the proposals have faced criticism, particularly from Northern groups and some stakeholders.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State argued that the reforms, if implemented, could disproportionately benefit states like Lagos and Rivers, leaving others at a disadvantage. In response to these concerns, President Tinubu ordered a comprehensive review of the reforms to address stakeholder grievances.

The National Assembly has also temporarily suspended deliberations on the bills, requesting additional clarification from the executive branch.

In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), Peter Obi highlighted the importance of public engagement in policymaking. “Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it,” Obi said. “However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.”

Obi underscored the need for deliberation, transparency, and consideration of the potential regional impacts of the proposed reforms. “When considering tax reforms, it is insufficient to focus solely on the benefits to the government, particularly in terms of increasing revenue collection. We must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions,” he stated.

He urged the federal government to prioritize public sensitization and secure the buy-in of citizens for any policy changes. “Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance, and without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail,” Obi added.

The presidency has defended the tax reform bills, asserting that they are designed to create a more efficient tax system. As the government works to address concerns and refine the proposals, the call for broader public involvement remains a significant aspect of the ongoing debate.
