PDP Won’t Hunt for Presidential Candidate in 2027 — Ogidi Declares

ABUJA — The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South caretaker committee, Emmanuel Ogidi, has said the opposition party will not go headhunting for a presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Ogidi insisted that the PDP already has its candidate, adding that the party’s immediate focus is rebuilding its structure and regaining the confidence of Nigerians.

“It’s called the Peoples Democratic Party, so what do you expect? We are talking about the people. Of course, we are the leading opposition, so we are going to direct the tone and the game, but we still have our joker,” Ogidi said.

According to him, the recent zoning of the presidential ticket to the South was a strategic decision, but discussions about specific candidates would only come after the party’s convention.

“In the game of cards, you don’t show your strength at the first hand,” he noted. “Right now, our pursuit is not the candidate but to get back the confidence of the people. Because we have not played that active role of opposition, that’s why APC gets away with all things.”

Ogidi emphasized that while the PDP’s doors remain open to new and returning members, the party is not desperate for candidates. Instead, he stressed that the party is committed to putting in place the best leadership team to drive its resurgence.

Urging Nigerians to give the PDP another chance, Ogidi likened the party to an Iroko tree in the forest that commands respect.

“PDP is a solid rock, an Iroko tree in the forest — all other trees bow. That’s why we want to get it right on convention day. Watch out for bigger surprises, we are going to surprise Nigerians,” he declared confidently.

Ogidi assured that the PDP, once the dominant political force in Nigeria, is preparing to stage a strong comeback ahead of 2027.
