The newly elected chairmen of Osun State’s 30 local government councils have officially received their certificates of return from the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) following Saturday’s local government elections.
OSIEC declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the state. In a statement, OSIEC Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, revealed that the Commission’s chairman, Hashim Abioye, congratulated the winners and urged them to be exemplary ambassadors of democracy in both conduct and service to the people.
Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the PDP praised voters for their active participation. Party chairman, Sunday Bisi, commended the electorate as the “heroes of democracy” for turning out in large numbers despite attempts to disrupt the process.
“Before and on Saturday, the will of our people for democracy was greatly tested by anti-democratic elements. From biased opinions to unlawful advice, the rights of Osun people to elect those who administer their affairs at the grassroots came under grave threat,” Bisi stated.
He also applauded the peaceful conduct of the poll and lauded voters for overcoming provocation and alleged harassment from compromised security agents, particularly the police.
