ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has mocked the recent wave of defections to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as misguided and likening the defectors to “prodigal sons” who left only to attack their former party irresponsibly.
In a statement issued on Monday by its Director General, Emmanuel Agbo, the Forum said the departure of key figures — including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former lawmaker Dino Melaye — has only strengthened the PDP rather than weakened it.
“Since their exit, the PDP has become much more formidable and focused, with clear determination to keep our eyes on the ball,” the statement read.
The governors blasted the ADC, calling it a “one-chance vehicle” that offered no serious political direction. According to them, the defectors’ sense of entitlement had long been a stumbling block to national unity and internal harmony within the PDP.
“The ADC before now, with their inordinate sense of entitlement, constituted a huge clog in the wheel of national unity and harmony. That they couldn’t even see the gravity of the security situation in the country isn’t surprising, as the prodigal son wasn’t known to have pity on his father’s fortune,” the Forum said.
Despite the biting criticism, the Forum left the door open for reconciliation, saying the PDP would be willing to welcome back any repentant defectors who show genuine remorse.
The development comes amid ongoing realignments in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the opposition coalition positioning itself to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
