Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, has disclosed that the former vice president has yet to confirm if he will contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Sowunmi noted that although Atiku has not officially declared his intentions, his demeanor suggests he may be considering a third consecutive run for the presidency.
“Atiku Abubakar is a man I deeply admire,” Sowunmi said. “I have asked him twice whether he intends to contest again. I asked, ‘If you’re running, what do we do with the existing structure? If not, we need a different approach.’”
Sowunmi explained that Atiku’s response has been non-committal, describing him as being in a “reflective mood.” He added, “He hasn’t said ‘yes,’ and he hasn’t said ‘no.’ Any sensible person would understand the weight of such a decision, especially given the challenges and betrayals he has faced.”
Emphasizing the need for strategic changes, Sowunmi expressed a willingness to support Atiku’s decision, whatever it may be. “I don’t work on assumptions. Once he decides, we’ll take the next steps,” he concluded.
Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, has remained a central figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. His potential candidacy for the 2027 election continues to be a subject of speculation.
