Former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido Calls on President Tinubu to Settle ₦45 Billion Debt Owed to MKO Abiola
Former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to settle the ₦45 billion debt allegedly owed to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola by the Nigerian government.
Lamido made the call during the public presentation of his memoir, “Being True To Myself,” held in Abuja on Tuesday.
In his remarks, Lamido emphasized the need to bring closure to the historic June 12 saga, referencing the 1993 presidential election which Abiola won but was never allowed to assume office.
“I would like to appeal to President Tinubu to close the chapter of June 12,” Lamido said. “In his book, General Ibrahim Babangida confirmed that Abiola won the election. When I visited him, he told me Abiola is being owed ₦45 billion.”
He added, “Abiola was double punished. First, he was denied his mandate. Second, he is still being owed that money.”
Lamido addressed the Minister of Information, who represented the President at the event, urging him to convey the message directly to Tinubu. “Please tell him to pay Abiola’s family the ₦45 billion. Once this is done, the chapter of June 12 will be closed. It is very important,” he said.
Beyond the appeal, Lamido expressed heartfelt gratitude to Allah, dignitaries, and contributors who supported his book project. He paid special tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing him as his “Boss, Guide, Leader, and Inspiration.”
“Baba, I sincerely and profoundly thank you,” Lamido said, referring to Obasanjo. “May God Almighty bless you with abundant health and wisdom.”
Lamido also recognized the contributions of General Abdulsalami Abubakar for his integrity and national service, and praised the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for promoting religious harmony and gracing the event with his presence.
Acknowledging others, he thanked Dr. Iyorchia Ayu for reviewing the book, calling him a “MunChi comrade,” and commended the editorial and media teams for their resilience and success in generating national buzz for the memoir.
Lamido’s book, “Being True To Myself,” captures his political journey and reflections, with the book launch drawing notable figures from across Nigeria’s political and cultural landscape.
