Say Nigerians, not political endorsements, will decide 2027 outcome
ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have dismissed recent endorsements of President Bola Tinubu by All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and stakeholders, describing them as acts of desperation driven by fear of defeat in the 2027 elections.
Speaking through his Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, Atiku said the coalition of opposition forces remains confident and unshaken, noting that Nigerians—not orchestrated endorsements—will determine the outcome of the next general election.
“When you’ve prepared diligently for an exam, you sleep peacefully the night before, confident of success. That’s exactly the position of our coalition,” Ibe stated.
He criticized the Tinubu-led administration for prioritizing political maneuvering over addressing pressing national issues such as insecurity and the economic crisis.
“Insecurity is at unprecedented levels, with insurgents reclaiming territories in Borno and other parts of the country. The cost of living is unbearable—families can hardly feed, afford healthcare, or send their children to school. Instead of focusing on governance, the ruling party is busy playing politics,” he said.
Ibe also accused the APC of weaponizing anti-corruption agencies to coerce opposition figures into defecting, claiming that many recent defections were the result of political blackmail and intimidation.
“These defections are not ideological. Politicians are being forced to choose between persecution and submission. What we’re witnessing in places like Delta State is nothing short of political hostage-taking,” he alleged.
Also weighing in, the PDP National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Umar Bature, downplayed the significance of the endorsements, recalling that former President Goodluck Jonathan lost the 2015 election despite having the backing of 21 governors.
“Tinubu’s endorsements are just for show—cosmetic at best. They don’t reflect public sentiment. The real question is: has this administration served Nigerians well? If not, endorsements mean nothing,” Bature asserted.
He maintained that there is no crisis within the PDP, insisting that internal dissent is part of the democratic process and would eventually be resolved.
As the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections begins to take shape, the PDP and its allies appear poised to challenge the APC’s dominance, banking on growing dissatisfaction with current governance to shift the tide in their favor.
