Workers across five Oyo State government-owned tertiary institutions have embarked on an indefinite strike over unresolved salary disputes and the non-payment of the minimum wage.
The affected institutions include The Polytechnic, Ibadan; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora; and Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate.
The strike, declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Monday, comes just days after the commencement of first-semester examinations at The Polytechnic, Ibadan. As a result, institutions have shut their gates, disrupting academic activities.
JAC, which represents approximately 15 staff unions across these institutions, stated that the action was necessary to pressure the state government into fulfilling its financial obligations.
In an official statement made available to Vanguard, JAC announced:
“The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Oyo State-Owned Tertiary Institutions hereby announces the commencement of an indefinite strike action starting on March 10, 2025.”
The committee cited the non-implementation of a 25/35% salary increase—which their counterparts in other institutions have received since January 2024—as well as the non-payment of the new minimum wage for Polytechnic and College of Education workers.
Despite multiple engagements with management, JAC emphasized that the state government had failed to address these concerns, leaving them with no option but to withdraw their services until their demands are met.
