The Oyo State Government has initiated the distribution of relief materials to traders affected by recent fire outbreaks across the state.
Mrs. Toyin Balogun, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, made the announcement during the launch of a N20 million livelihood support grant for the victims on Tuesday.
Over the past two months, at least five markets in Oyo State have been affected by fire incidents, including Sango Market, Agodi Gate Spare Parts Market, Gbaremu Market, and Olodo Market.
Balogun highlighted that the relief grants would benefit traders from Gbaremu, Sango, Oke-Itunu, and Oranyan markets.
She explained, “This event marks another important step by the Oyo State Government in demonstrating its commitment to the welfare of residents. Recently, there was a series of fire outbreaks across the state. Our findings revealed that the economic impact extended beyond the direct victims, as each affected trader has a minimum of 10 to 20 dependents relying on them.”
The Commissioner emphasized that the grants aim to help victims regain their economic stability and support their dependents. She further noted, “Governor Seyi Makinde prioritized this intervention, approving a significant amount to assist the fire victims. This is just the first phase of the support.”
In addition to the financial assistance, Balogun mentioned that the government is focused on preventing future fire outbreaks. “We are also organizing training sessions for women in the state to raise awareness on fire prevention and mitigation in markets,” she added.
