A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Anthony Ogunsola, has called for stronger executive action to curb the growing threats posed by unregulated mining activities across the state.
Ogunsola, who represents Iwajowa Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Solid Minerals, raised the alarm during Tuesday’s plenary session, warning that illegal mining is fuelling insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry, and environmental degradation in host communities.
Citing the infiltration of unknown individuals into local communities, Ogunsola stressed that the rising incidents of criminality are directly linked to poorly regulated mining operations. “We are facing increased security challenges due to the activities of illegal miners, which are breeding kidnapping, robbery, and other social vices,” he said.
While commending Governor Seyi Makinde’s previous efforts—particularly Executive Order No. 001 of 2023 aimed at regulating the sector—Ogunsola noted that compliance among miners remains worryingly low. He revealed that only 13 mining operators are currently registered with the state’s mineral agency.
“This low level of compliance poses a direct threat to the peace and security of mining communities,” he stated, referencing the recent protest in Itasa community over alleged illegal mining operations by a private firm.
The lawmaker also criticised the apparent inaction of the State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee, as well as the lack of synergy among regulatory bodies overseeing mining operations in the state.
“There is an urgent need for the executive arm to adopt proactive measures to clamp down on illegal mining and protect the interests of host communities,” Ogunsola said.
To this end, he proposed several actions including:
Enhanced logistical support for the state’s enforcement task force
Improved collaboration between regulatory and security agencies
Public awareness campaigns for communities affected by mining
A full audit and site inspection of all mineral title holders in the state
Ogunsola’s motion was well received by his colleagues and underscores a growing concern about the security and environmental consequences of unchecked mining activities in Oyo State.
